The 2020 NHL Draft got started last night, with the event being held virtually, because obviously. Now I love hockey as much as the next guy, but I know about as much about these kids as I do about my neighbors. Which is to say I know what city they live in. But it’s hockey, so on to the draft!!!
Well I think naturally you have to start at the top. With the #1 pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, the New York Rangers took Alexis Lafrenière, a good old French-Canadian boy from Rimouski Océanic of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. I’ve been told he’s good at hockey.
Another Canadian off the board as the LA Kings took Quinton Byfield of the Sudbury Wolveswith the second pick. Byfield is the highest drafted black player in NHL history, which is obviously monumental. Also Quinton Byfield is a dope name. Many hockey players have sweet names. Like Nick Millis. Another note on Byfield; I’ve been told he’s good at hockey.
My Anaheim Ducks had two picks in the first round. At number six they took Canadian defenseman Jamie Drysdale of the Eerie Otters. With the 27th pick, they selected Canadian winger Jacob Perreault of the Sarnia Sting. I have been told they are good at hockey.
Quick observations here. I can only assume Canadians are good at hockey based on these picks. Also, I love these minor league hockey teams. The Brandon Wheat Kings. Kingston Frontenacs. Drummondville Voltigeurs. Cleveland Monsters. If you believe hard enough, you can make any name happen. Alright, onward and upward.
Dylan Holloway was selected by the Edmonton Oilers at 14. He’s Canadian. I don’t really care about this except he’s a Wisconsin Badger. I’ve been told he’s good at hockey.
Later on in the draft we had the Columbus Blue Jackets making this move.
I have yet to hear if he is good at hockey.
And finally, we have the San Jose Sharks ending Day One by taking Ozzy Weisblatt, who is also Canadian. Standard. But an awesome move by them when announcing him as their pick.
Cool shit, San Jose. I have been told he’s good at hockey.
And there you have it. The rest of the draft is going on today, but I won’t be recapping that for several reasons. I don’t have NHL Network. I don’t know anything. You don’t care. I do love the draft though, and it’s cool to see these kids’ dreams come true. Because as large child told me this morning, “I can’t wait till I have a real job, and the job is the NHL.”
